The Pa Game Commission is reporting a large harvest of black bears for the first day of the 4-day season. The season opened this past Saturday with a reported first day harvest of 1,241 black bears. Hunters said that the early snow storm helped with spotting and tracking bears. Over 170,000 bear licenses were sold, and the game commission estimates that the 2018 bear harvest will be over 4,000 bears. The state bear population is around 20,000.
Some large bears taken on the opening day include:
A 614-pound male, taken in Toby Township, Clarion County by Tom Wilson of Rimersburg, a 704 pound male, taken by Micky Moore, of Clearfield and a 679 pound male taken by Jordan Tutmaher, of Warren County.
