Elementary students in the Forest Area School District have been studying the musical concept of rhythm through instrumental playing. The students learned what rhythm is and how it relates to the performing of music. The students studied the concept of beat and learned the value of the various rhythm notes and how they mathematically relate to each other. They also learned the organization of rhythm through the use of time signatures and measures. Once the concepts were explained, the students applied these concepts by playing both tuned percussion such as xylophones and metalophones and untuned percussion such as drums, cymbals, and latin percussion instruments. The upper grades learned how to incorporate various rhythm patterns to songs.
